Lemonade

Lemonade

These rare fruits are absolute gems, and are something that you must try. They are available Organically for just a  short time in the middle of Melbourne’s winter, so make the most of them when you see them.

A cross between a mandarin and a lemon, a lemonade is a mouthwatering treat that is an instant favourite with all who try them. It looks like a lemon, but is a lot sweeter, and less acidic, and has no trace of bitterness that you find in some lemons. The fruits are easy to peel and break into segments like a mandarin. Because they have a fairly soft skin, they don’t keep as long as some other citrus, so if you’d like to preserve them, try squeezing the juice and freezing it in iceblock trays. (instant icy treat!) The fruits are incredibly juicy, with 2 lemonades yielding a good glass of juice. (can be watered down for children).

Choose fruits that are heavy and avoid any with soft spots. The dark markings on the skin do not indicate any blemish to the fruit.

Some serving ideas:
 * Cut into segments as you would an orange, and eat as is.
* Squeeze the juice over a salad of rocket leaves, baby spinach or other greens, and add a splash of full flavoured olive oil.
*Freeze into ice trays, then serve 2 blocks to a shot of vodka, neat (the best!)or top with water.
*Remove peel from fruits, then thinly slice. Remove pips and cut into halves or quarters, and add to a warm salad of steamed broccoli shoots, toasted pepitas, cooked quinoa and cubed feta. Drizzle with macadamia or olive oil and loads of freshly ground black pepper. Great with grilled fish.
